It’s hard to believe that We Brought Beer opened one year ago today, but it’s true. Proving the old adage that time really does fly when you’re having fun, the past 365 days have gone by in a whirlwind of new beers, new faces and new learnings (like not forgetting to turn the gas off before disconnecting a keg lest you end up with a face full of beer!).

When we opened we were a little bit unsure as to how we would be received by the local Balhamites. Our market research before opening had stretched as far as saying, “I live around here and I would love a shop that sells a huge variety of beers, so I reckon there are probably others who would likewise appreciate one.” And Hildreth Street just felt right, it had a residual buzz about it that has gradually got louder as the year has gone on and more great places have opened up around us.

Fortunately for us, our little shop has been well and truly embraced and welcomed by the local Balham community and we’ve loved every minute we’ve been open.

As we quietly celebrate our 1st birthday with a couple of our finest beers, we thought it would be fun to look back at a few stats from the past year:

– We’ve sold a staggering 1,107 different beers in bottle and can (although not all at the same time).

– Our top 10 selling beers from the first year were:

  1. Kona Big Wave (4.4%)
  2. Beavertown Gamma Ray (5.4%)
  3. Fourpure Session IPA (4.2%)
  4. Kernel Table Beer (3%)
  5. Beavertown Neck Oil (4.3%)
  6. Anchor Steam Beer (4.9%)
  7. Kernel Pale Ale (6.9%)
  8. Belleville Commonside Pale (5%)
  9. Kona Firerock (5.9%)
  10. Kernel IPA (7.2%)

– We’ve sold beer from 216 different breweries (and counting).

– Our breweries have come from 19 different countries, across five continents.

– We’ve hosted the following breweries for Meet the Brewers:

  • Brixton
  • And Union
  • Fourpure
  • Left Hand
  • By the Horns
  • Belleville
  • Gipsy Hill
  • Lervig
  • Orbit
  • Redwell
  • Brew by Numbers
  • Weird Beard

– We’ve also put on special tastings to showcase both Belgian and American beers, as well as a beer & marshmallow pairing and a home-brewing demo.

– We’ve put on over 250 different beers on growler fills.

– We even finally got round to telling you what we have on tap with our new On Tap page.

– We filled the fridges with 150 different American beers to celebrate Independence Day.

– We currently have 6 rotating cask ales tapped as part of our birthday cask ale festival.

Our first year has been a lot of fun and we can’t wait to keep on bringing our customers more great beers and events. The next couple of months are shaping up nicely for meet the brewers and you can now keep up to date on our events page. We’ll also be announcing some exciting news in the next week or so about some of our future plans.

None of this would have been possible without our amazing customers whose curiosity for new beers keeps us going week in week out. Thank you to all of you for your support over the past year, and we hope to see a lot more of you in the future.

Best wishes from the team, James, Rob, Ben, Alex & Chippy (not pictured, sorry Chippy).
