This is another set of our Fortnight Spotlight beers that will now occupy our centre table for the next two weeks. These are beers that we absolutely love and want to highlight to people who come into our shop and you guys who all read our blogs.

These aren’t meant to be definitive descriptions of the beers, but are just enough to get your appetite whet for what we have in the shop.

8 Wired – iStout

Style

Stout

ABV

10.5%

Location

Wakworth, New Zealand

Brewery

Like most breweries, 8 Wired started off with the owner being given a homebrew kit, and grew quickly from there. Originally a contract brewing for five years, they now own their own site and have won numerous awards for their beers.

The Beer

The iStout is a very big beer! As you’d expect from an imperial stout, there are huge hits of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. Below this are hints of dark fruits and a vanilla-like sweetness. There is a warming hit of alcohol at the end which keeps the whole beer under control but never becomes overbearing.

Headlands – Pt. Bonita Rustic Lager

Style

Lager

ABV

5.3%

Location

San Francisco

Brewery

Headlands Brewing Co. believe that if you’re going to brew a good beer, you may as well put it in big cans. The two co-founders had involved in the San Francisco brewing scene for several years before opening up Headlands.

The Beer

Pt. Bonita is their Bohemian pils, brewed with some malt rye alongside the normal barley. The spiciness of the rye perfectly compliments the noble hops used. It has quite a high bitterness for the style, but it never becomes overbearing, There is a sweet, grassy finish that keeps it easy drinking.

Hoppin’ Frog – Infusion C

Style

IPA

ABV

7.5%

Location

Akron, Ohio

Brewery

Hoppin’ Frog were founded back in 2006 and have gone on to establish themselves as the top brewery in Ohio. This is down to their constant experimentation and willingness to push the boundaries of what you can expect from beer.

The Beer

Every Tuesday in their tap room, they infuse their beers with funky ingredients. From these weekly experiments came Infusion C, an IPA infused with vanilla beans. As soon as the bottle is cracked open, there is the most incredible aroma of sweet vanilla which acts as the perfect foil to the beers sharp, hoppy bitterness.

Mikkeller – Running Club

Style

Pilsner

ABV

4.5%

Location

Copenhagen, Denmark (kinda…)

Brewery

Mikkeller is a gypsy brewer – he uses other peoples breweries. Since 2006, Mikkeller has produced some of the most sought after beers in the world. The ingredients may seem weird, but the beers are awesome.

The Beer

This beer is brewed specially by Mikkeller for the weekly running clubs he runs around the world. The idea is that this is the perfect post-workout beer, an incredibly crisp and refreshing pilsner. A light, dry body and plenty of hopping gives it a citrusy and piney bitter finish. You don’t need to run to enjoy this beer.

Sambrook’s Brewery – No. 5 Barley Wine

Style

Barley Wine

ABV

8.2%

Location

Battersea, London

Brewery

Sambrook’s started in 2008, establishing themselves as one of the first wave of modern breweries. They have become a common sight on pumpclips around London. Recently, they have introduced more American style beers to their range.

The Beer

This N0.5 was brewed to celebrate Sambrook’s 5th year anniversary, two years ago. It pours a deep, ruby colour. There are aromas and flavours of rich, dried fruit. This is all balanced out by a slight hint of booziness which gives it a wonderfully warming finish. This is a luxurious beer that is definitely a sipper.

Wild Beer Co. – Shnoodlepip

Style

Wild Beer

ABV

6.5%

Location

Shepton Mallet, Somerset

Brewery

Wild Beer Co. are a firm favourite amongst WBB staff because of the freshness and experimentation that goes into their beer. Whether it’s their sours or pale ales or something weirder, the beers are consistently amongst the most exciting.

The Beer

This beer is a three way collaboration with Burning Sky and Good George. Spelt gives the beer a bigger, fuller, body. A combination of saison and brett yeast is used, whilst pink peppercorns excentuate the spiciness. Passion fruit brings an incredible tropical character with a tangy finish from hibiscus flowers.
