It’s St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday which means a weekend ahead of tall green hats, fake orange beards and too much Guinness being drunk. Now look, far be it for us to tell you what to drink (although that is kind of our job!), and whilst we don’t have a massive issue with Ireland’s most famous beer, we do think there are some excellent dark beers you could substitute in for your token pint of the black stuff this weekend. If it makes you feel better, you could even drink them out of a Guiness glass.
Unbarred – Bacio Gelato
This really is something special – a collaboration between Unbarred Brewery and Italian/London brewery Ora, brewed as part of Ora’s gelato series of beers. A rich, smooth stout, weighing in at a respectable 6% ABV, it has been brewed with chocolate, hazelnuts, vanilla and, in their own words, real Italian passion. ‘Bacio’ is the Italian word for kiss and this can quite simply be described as a kiss in a glass!
Siren – Bourbon Barrel Aged Caribbean Chocolate Cake
Very much upping the ante, next up we have Siren’s Bourbon barrel aged Caribbean Chocolate Cake. To the beer first, it’s a dense, rich and luxurious stout, brewed with cacoa nibs that has been ageing in a selection of bourbon barrels, picking up delicious vanilla, whiskey and wood character. It’s a beer to finish the night off with and it’s a beer you are best of sharing with someone you care deeply about – even better if they’re Irish.
Triple. Fruit. Stout. Enough said? Almost. This beer is a collaboration between Hackney Brewery & New York’s Barrier Brewery. Expect flavours of chocolate, blueberry, blackberry & raspberry all working beautifully alongside the roasted malt profile to provide something like a black forest gateau being enjoyed with an espresso on the side.
