Want to know the difference between an Abbey and a Trappist beer? A bit confused by the maths & spelling of Dubbels, Tripels and the rest? Then this is the beer tasting for you.

Belgians have been brewing beer for centuries and let’s face it they do it pretty bloody well. Whether it be a group of Trappist monks or plucky modern upstart breweries, the Belgian beer scene continues to innovate and inspire breweries the world over. The current popularity of Saisons here in the UK owes its routes to the Belgian farmhouses of yesteryear, a refreshing beer drunk more by bearded farm workers than bearded hipsters! And every beer geek worth their salt will go weak at the knees when encountering any beer brewed with Brettanomyces yeast strains.

Although slightly overlooked in recent years due to the resurgence of the US & UK scenes, at We Brought Beer we still think Belgian beers are some of the best and indeed most important in developing a full understanding of any beer culture.

To that end, we are delighted to be welcoming a Belgian beer sommellier to the shop, who will lead us through a tutored tasting of five different Belgian beers, covering a range of styles, breweries & history.

Hailing from Stavanger on the South West coast of Norway (we looked it up so you didn’t have to), Lervig Aktiebrygerri are one of Norway’s finest craft breweries. Headed up by American Mike Murphy, who cut his teeth brewing in the US, Italy and latterly as part of the Mikkeller troupe, their range extends across the spectrum from low ABV Jonny Low at 2.5% to the ‘challenging’ Protestor DIPA at 18%. Hops are their stock in trade though as evidenced by beers such as Lucky Jack pale ale, Galaxy IPA and Betty Brown Ruby red ale which all enjoy a liberal helping of our favourite lupulin species.

Up until now we’d not seen much of Lervig here in the UK other than the odd bottle & can, although you may remember the Farmhouse IPA they brewed in collaboration with our very own Magic Rock brewery which we stocked shortly after opening our doors last year. This is set to change as Lervig are beginning to send more of the good stuff our way and we are delighted to be one of their first stockists anywhere in the UK.

To celebrate their arrival, the Lervig crew will be gracing us with their presence and hosting a meet the brewer event at We Brought Beer on Wednesday 22nd April at 7.30pm. They’ll be guiding us through some of their range as well as giving us the lowdown on who they are and answering any questions you may have (such as where is the translate button on your website!).

As you’d expect, we’ll have a good number of their beers in bottle, can and on growler fills on the night; suffice to say we’re really looking forward to welcoming them to Balham.
